Spray Painted Dried Flower Arrangement

One of the benefits of growing hydrangeas (besides enjoying how pretty they are all summer) is being able to dry them for decorating with in the fall and winter. Did you know you can spray paint dried flowers! and flower arrangements and make pretty, custom bouquets Did you know they make special spray paint for flowers? They do! In fact it comes in a ton of different colors! We decided to use gold floral spray paint for this project.

Supplies for Painting Dried Flowers

–Floral spray paint  (gold and copper for this project)

-Dried Flowers

-Drop cloth

Cardboard box

Cardboard box

Personal protective equipment (Old clothing/mask/respirator/safety goggles/gloves)

Prep the Work Area

This project works best in a well-ventilated area. Make sure to follow all of the directions on the paint can as well and how flowers should be treated after. I like to spray paint my flowers outside on a tarp or old cardboard.

Collect the Dried Flowers

Either purchase dried flowers or dry your own fresh flowers picked at the peak of bloom. I like to gather and dry flowers such as hydrangeas (there are many different kinds to try!) , and grasses. Sustainable flowers from the garden such as Yarrow also works well as does coneflower heads and the seed pods of daylilies, eucalyptus and even wheat stalks. Look for flowers with sturdy stems and seed casings that stay firm in winter. The nice thing about hydrangeas is that they are already a golden color when dried so it doesn’t take much paint to make them a really pretty color.

Lay The Dried Florals on a Protected Surface

Lay them a part so they aren’t touching instead of keeping them in a bundle. Following the directions on the can, lightly spray the flowers and let dry. Turn over and repeat on the opposite side. If your blooms are delicate, you can also poke a hole in the top  of a recycled box and  stick the stems through to keep them upright, just like we did when we spray painted these faux flowers.

Let the Flowers Dry Completely

Don’t gather your flowers in an arrangement or bunch until the paint is completely dry. Once they are dry create a pretty arrangement or a unique centerpiece.

 Arrange Painted Dried Flowers in a Vase

Once they dried, I put them in a vase that I covered with an old sweater sleeve and a band of sparkly tape. It was so easy to make and really dressed up a plain glass vase!

 I love how the same gold paint looks different on the grass heads and the Hydrangeas.The copper- colored Monarda heads are a pretty contrast in the  spray painted floral arrangement with the two kinds of hydrangeas.

It really makes a nice heartfelt gift as well. Make sure to keep the painted flowers away from small children and pets and away from heat and direct flame. It’s also a good idea to keep out of direct sunlight so it doesn’t fade the flowers

An entire grouping of these would make pretty wreaths and add so much texture!

It’s a perfect size piece of decor for fall!
