They Spray-Painted the Cherry Cabinets Tricorn Black but Kept the Brown Granite, Tile, and Floors

Dark cherry cabinets covered this kitchen from the island to the built-in appliances, surrounded by brown hardwood floors, tan tile, and speckled granite. Instead of replacing those finishes or choosing white paint, the homeowners went darker.

In a transformation shared by Instagram creator @duartpainting, the cabinets received Sherwin-Williams Tricorn Black SW 6258 and new gold hardware, with the original layout and major surfaces left in place.

Reddish-brown cherry cabinets lined the cooking wall, with upper doors surrounding the stainless steel microwave and a tall cabinet housing the built-in oven. Small square gold-toned knobs finished the raised-panel doors.

The original kitchen combined several brown finishes. Tan diamond-pattern tile covered the backsplash, speckled granite ran across the countertops, and dark wood planks extended across the floor.

A stainless steel refrigerator stood beside a black pantry door, with cabinets fitted above and around the appliance.

The Original Island Matched the Cherry Cabinets

The rectangular island carried the same reddish stain as the perimeter cabinets. Its granite top extended beyond the base, with storage drawers and doors facing the sink.

Two glass globe pendants hung above the island, while the surrounding floor provided walking space between the cooking area, sink, and refrigerator.

The island was part of the existing kitchen layout and remained in place during the makeover.

The painting crew cleaned, sanded, and primed the cabinets before applying Sherwin-Williams Tricorn Black SW 6258 with spray equipment. Sherwin-Williams Gallery Series Satin provided the finished coating.

The new paint covered the raised-panel doors, drawer fronts, cabinet frames, and exposed side panels. It concealed the reddish stain without replacing the cabinet fronts.

On the cooking wall, black cabinetry now surrounds the microwave and wall oven. Two upper doors have glass openings with dark-painted shelves visible behind them, breaking up the closed cabinet fronts.

Long gold bar pulls replaced the small knobs, with vertical handles fitted to cabinet doors and horizontal handles installed across the drawers.

The hardware stands out against the black satin finish, while the raised-panel profiles remain visible around each handle.

Stainless steel appliances and the tan backsplash provide contrast across the cooking wall, where the original cabinet arrangement remains intact.

The Island Received the Same Black Finish

Black paint extended across the island base, including the end panel with its electrical outlet. Matching gold pulls were installed on the storage doors and drawers.

The granite countertop remained untouched, retaining its pale background and dense brown, gray, and black speckling.

From the sink side, the island sits between the painted perimeter cabinets and the adjoining living area. Its original dimensions and storage configuration were preserved.

The wider view shows Tricorn Black extending around the sink, cooking area, and built-in oven. The tan tile backsplash remains visible beneath the upper cabinets, while the speckled granite continues around the work surfaces.

Brown hardwood floors were not replaced. The stainless steel dishwasher, microwave, and wall oven also stayed, along with the glass pendant lights above the island.

Rather than introduce new materials throughout the kitchen, the project changed the cabinetry and hardware while retaining the surrounding finishes.

The side-by-side comparison shows the original reddish cherry cabinets beside the finished Tricorn Black kitchen.

The original wood stain has disappeared beneath the satin finish, and long gold handles replace the small knobs. Black paint extends across the island, upper cabinets, lower storage, and tall appliance surrounds.

The granite countertops, tan tile backsplash, brown floors, and kitchen layout remain. What began as a kitchen filled with reddish wood cabinets now has black cabinetry without replacing those existing surfaces.
