Many people appreciate modern design in the home, but for Jewish people, modern Judaica is the perfect complement to their contemporary home. And it’s not just Jewish people buying Judaica, it’s also Christians who appreciate items like candlesticks, Kiddush cups, modern menorahs, and more. Let’s look at the beautiful items in the home of a Jewish person or a fan of Judaica.
A modern mezuzah adorns the door of the contemporary Jewish home. A mezuzah is a small box containing a handwritten “mezuzah scroll” that signifies that a home is Jewish. This small mezuzah case containing a mezuzah scroll is not just a religious product, it’s also the chance for the owner to show their personal style. Inside the scroll is “Shema Yisrael,” a list of commandments to the Jewish people telling them the basic ways to observe Judaism. It’s part of the Old Testament.
Laura Cowan, a modern Judaica designer, has a collection of mezuzahs that is one of the most famous in the world of Judaica. Her sleek designs, inspired by the universe, Tel Aviv, the sea, Jewish themes and space have a distinctive and enchanting style. In 2019, Cowan has seven distinct designs and is currently in the early design stage of a new product line of mezuzahs to be produced.
One of her most famous mezuzahs is the Apollo Mezuzah. It’s inspired by the windows on the Apollo and a replica was taken into space.
While a mezuzah is an everyday object, her other designs are specifically for Shabbat (Friday night until Saturday sundown) or other holidays. For example, for Rosh HaShanah, or the Jewish New Year, Cowan has honey dishes. Dipping apples in honey is a traditional Rosh HaShanah activity and some families use honey for their challah from Rosh HaShanah to Sukkot. Many couples use honey for their challah during the first year of marriage for a “sweet marriage.”
For Passover, Seder Plates, Matzoh Trays. For Friday night, holidays, or even just as decoration Cowan’s candlesticks and tableware are fantastic pieces of modern art for Shabbat or anytime.
One of her bestsellers is a Hanukkah menorah and a travel menorah. For Jewish people, lighting the menorah is an important part of celebrating Hanukkah. Hanukkah menorahs are popular Jewish wedding presents, Bar or Bat Mitzvah gifts, and of course Hanukkah gifts.
For chess set collectors, Laura’s Rocket Chess Set is a modern masterpiece. Each piece is handcrafted, made in anodized aluminum with polished stainless-steel accents. This contemporary chess set features sleek discs and cones. Embellished with six diamond-cut zirconia, the Queen’s crown represents the Star of David, which can also be seen in the King’s crown.
All of Laura’s Judaica is 100% made in Israel in her Tel Aviv workshop. Cowan’s beautiful Judaica art masterpieces are shipped around the world directly from her workshop. Laura Cowan is a graduate of Silversmithing and Jewellery at London Guildhall University. Museums around the world feature her works.
