Paint A Texture Art Ghost Canvas

I absolutely love using unconventional materials in creating art, and texture art is one of those projects that lets you use things that are very unconventional.  I recently saw a really cute texture art ghost canvas that is viral on Tik Tok that’s so easy to make, I wanted to share how to create it with you. It uses fast dry spackle, a jumbo popsicle stick and craft paint. It ends up looking so darn cute and is so easy to make! In fact, we are running this as a workshop in the studio, so if you want to make that with us or take another hands on workshop, you can check it out here.

Two paintings of white cartoon ghosts with black eyes are displayed against a wooden wall; one has a black background, the other a pink background. A small beige vase sits in the foreground.

A jumbo popsicle stick, or similar item

White craft paint

Black craft paint

Paint color of choice for the canvas

A foam brush applies light pink paint to a small square canvas, with a dish of paint nearby. The name "Jennifer Rizzo" is written in the bottom right corner.

Base Coat Your Canvas

Start to create your canvas by painting on the base paint color. We used black paint as a backdrop for the larger canvas ans a sweet, pastel pink for the smaller canvas. but you could also paint it really any paint color your would like.

A hand holds a wooden stick with pink spackle over a small, square white canvas on a brown surface. A container of spackling paste is partially visible.

Prepare Your Spackle Medium

Let the backdrop painted in acrylic paint dry completely and add a second coat of craft paint if needed.  Using the craft stick or popsicle stick, stir the spackle until it’s a creamy consistency. Once the spackle is stirred and a little bit fluffy, scoop up a medium amount of spackle on the end of the popsicle stick and press it straight down onto the canvas and pull straight downward, lifting at the end. Our spackle brand starts off as pink and turns white when dry. This is so helpful in seeing when it’s ready to paint! If you paint your spackle before it’s 100% dry, it tends to dissolve and become mushy.

Layer Your Spackle Medium For An Effect Of Multiple Ghosts

While the first ghost is still wet, take a second scoop of compound of the same size and repeat, layering it over the edge of the first ghost. Continue to scoop and press, layering each ghost on top of each other.Once all of the ghosts are layered, let them dry completely overnight.

A wooden stick spreads light purple paint onto a small, square, pale pink canvas placed on a brown surface.

You can choose to layer a few ghosts like we did on the canvas or fill the entire thing top to bottom. Either way it’s a pretty cute and easy way to make a ghost painting. If you want to learn how to paint a ghost, see this post .

Add A Layer of White Paint On The Ghosts

When the spackle is completely dry, use the flat brush to paint a layer of white paint over the ghosts and let it dry. We painted some of our ghosts to the end of the canvas, but you can also let them float on the canvas. Use the base coat color to touch up the background.

A paintbrush applies thick white paint in the shape of a flower on a small, light pink canvas. The canvas sits on a brown surface.

Paint The Eyes On The Ghosts

Once the craft paint on the ghosts is completely dry, use the thin liner paint brush and make two dots/thin lines for the eyes on each of the ghosts. It’s easiest to start at the top and work downward.

A person uses a brush to paint black eyes on textured white ghost shapes arranged in a pyramid on a pink canvas.

To preserve the piece, paint the entire canvas with a clear sealer and let dry and display in your Halloween decor.I love how the two pieces look layered next to each other!
