Want to update worn oak cabinets without replacing an entire kitchen? Imgur user 5secondmemory kept the existing raised-panel cabinetry, painted it teal, changed much of the hardware, and used a broken dishwasher opening to add the drawer storage the kitchen needed.
Instead of removing the cabinet boxes, counters, backsplash, or flooring, the project focused on the surfaces and storage that caused problems. The oak finish disappeared under teal paint, black knobs replaced much of the older hardware, and a new three-drawer cabinet took over the space left by a dishwasher that no longer worked.
Oak Cabinets Filled the Original Kitchen
Oak covered the upper and lower cabinets around the range, with raised-panel doors and visible grain repeated across the narrow cabinet fronts. The homeowner described the cabinets as being in rough shape, with greasy knobs and surfaces that were hard to clean.
Brown counters, beige tile flooring, and the oak finish occupied a similar color range. Stainless steel appliances and the white geometric backsplash added contrast, but the wood cabinets still controlled most of the room.
Teal Paint Changed the Cabinets Without Hiding Their Original Design
Teal covers the doors, frames, corner sections, and lower cabinets while the raised-panel profiles remain visible. Oak grain still reads through the painted surface, so the change preserves the construction of the original doors instead of disguising them.
Black knobs replace the older round metal hardware across much of the cabinetry. Against the brown counters and beige flooring, the new color becomes the strongest change in the room.

Existing flooring, countertop, backsplash, and door trim stayed in place. Rather than rebuilding the room around the new cabinet, paint ties the added storage into what was already there.
Original Oak Grain Ran Across Doors, Frames, and Corners
A closer view before painting shows how much oak was visible around the range. Grain runs across tall upper doors, narrow corner cabinets, drawer fronts, base doors, and face frames.
Keeping those components avoided replacing a large amount of cabinetry that still served its purpose. The project changed the finish while retaining the door profiles, cabinet sizes, and U-shaped arrangement.

Small appliances still occupy the same corner work zone, but the stronger cabinet color changes how the backsplash and countertop register against it.
Teal Wrapped Around the Corner Cabinetry
Painting continued across both sides of the range and around the corner, giving the U-shaped kitchen one cabinet color. The same teal covers upper doors, base cabinets, drawer fronts, face frames, and toe kicks.
The original door profiles remain easy to see, but the oak no longer divides the kitchen into dozens of wood-grain panels. Teal turns those separate pieces into a more consistent cabinet run.
The Layout Stayed While the Cabinet Finish Changed
A wider view shows how little of the kitchen footprint needed to move. The refrigerator remains at the entrance, the range stays centered on the back wall, and the sink continues along the right-hand counter.
Painting every cabinet run makes the update visible from one end of the room to the other. Beige floor tile and brown countertops remain from the earlier kitchen, showing how much impact the cabinet finish has without a full remodel.
Tall Pantry Storage Received the Same Teal Finish
The tall cabinet near the windows was also painted teal, connecting storage outside the main U-shaped work area with the rest of the kitchen. Its two-door configuration and position remain unchanged.
Keeping the pantry cabinet also preserved storage that would have been expensive to replace for the sake of matching the new finish. Paint brought it into the updated palette without changing how the space around the windows functions.
Corner Storage Stayed Behind the Painted Doors
The update focused on cabinet exteriors rather than replacing working storage inside. Behind one painted corner door, existing swing-out racks continue to hold pans and cookware.
That detail shows why keeping the cabinet boxes made sense for this kitchen. Useful interior fittings remained in service while the visible doors and frames received the new finish.
