Replacing tile countertops and ceramic floors wasn’t part of the budget, so Reddit user u/DayZ-0253 chose a different approach. Over eight days, working 12 to 14 hours each day with help from family, they repainted the original oak cabinets instead of replacing them.
Sage green lower cabinets, white uppers, fresh hardware, and brightened grout changed the look of the kitchen while leaving the original tile countertops and flooring in place.
Orange Oak Defined Every Surface
Orange oak cabinets stretched across both sides of the galley kitchen, surrounded by beige tile countertops, matching backsplash, and ceramic floor tile. The warm wood stain dominated the room and made every finish feel connected to the same era.
Although the cabinets remained in good condition, the overall color palette made the kitchen feel heavier than its size.
White Upper Cabinets Changed the Balance
The upper cabinets received Sherwin-Williams Pure White, while the lower cabinets were painted Sherwin-Williams Parisian Patina. The two-tone approach broke up the long rows of cabinetry and reflected more natural light from the window.
Using white above and sage green below helped the narrow kitchen feel more open without changing the layout.
Pantry Cabinet Became Part of the Design
The tall pantry cabinet kept its original shape and storage but received the same fresh paint treatment as the rest of the kitchen.
Matching finishes across every cabinet created one continuous design from one end of the room to the other.
Wood Counter Added Warmth
A wood countertop replaced the pantry cabinet’s original surface, introducing a natural accent beside the painted cabinetry and white microwave niche.
The warmer wood tone connects with the original floor while adding contrast against the sage green base cabinets.
Paint Replaced Demolition
Instead of removing cabinets, the homeowner sanded every surface, applied Behr Dynasty Primer, then finished the cabinets with three coats of Sherwin-Williams Emerald Enamel using rollers. Cabinet hardware was replaced after the paint cured.
Keeping the original cabinet boxes avoided a much larger renovation while delivering a completely different appearance.
Tile Countertops Looked Brighter
The beige tile countertops stayed exactly where they were. What changed was everything around them. Fresh cabinet colors and whitewashed grout made the tile appear lighter and cleaner, leading many Reddit readers to believe the countertops had been replaced.
The homeowner explained that the grout was whitewashed with a paint-and-water mixture rather than regrouted, creating a brighter surface without removing the tile.
Black Hardware Finished the Cabinets
New black pulls replaced the original hardware and added contrast across both cabinet colors.
The darker hardware sharpened the raised-panel doors while giving the older cabinets a more current appearance.
Original Floor Became a Neutral Backdrop
The ceramic tile floor also remained untouched. Once the cabinets changed, the floor blended into the overall palette instead of competing with the wood finish that had dominated the room before.
